tools, machines and equipment

Extending our potential to navigate, manipulate and change our environment, tools and machines are an index of our wants. I was thinking about how we are defined by them and playing at inventing inventions for a different us.

In order to make objects that appeared to have arrived through functional  rather than aesthetic decision-making, I used different ways of distancing authorship. These included making collages of both drawings made from observation and collages made from doodles. These would go on to become the source of a painting or sculpture. Another way was to combine the drawing styles of two people in the drawn equivalent of a game of consequences. This process lead to the “organic machine” paintings which combine elements that I couldn’t have invented on my own.
